One of my all time favorites is Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia that can be editted by anyone, it usually has way more info than necessary on whatever topic you want to learn about.
My second favorite is Yahoo! Answers. Ask a question or read responses to questions. I use it primarily for research in conjunction with the other two resources mentioned in this post.
This is one of the best free sites for finding out how many daily searches are being conducted for any topic you are interested in: WordTracker’s GTrends tool.
How about an example?
Say I wanted to create a product about cats and kittens, a one of a kind calendar for cat lovers. I’d hop over to gtrends and do two search for cats and kittens to see which is most popular, right now *calendar* has 84,769 searches and more specifically *cat calendar* has 51 daily searches, and kitten calendar has 5 daily searches.
Multiply by 28 to get an idea of a months worth of traffic 1428 for cats and 140 for kittens. Next i search GTrends for cats and kittens looking for problems like ‘cat training’ then i hop over to yahoo answers and do a search for cat and kittens and cat training, cat peeing, cat care, etc.
Next I go to IStockPhoto.com to find some ultra cute cat and kitten pics, which I’ll add to my calendar that I’ll create over at CafePress.com.
All i need now is sweet salespage and traffic to send to it - ebay, google adwords, article marketing, a blog, etc - I already know what people are searching for from Gtrends, I already have a list of common questions and maybe some good answers too from Yahoo Answers, and I have a physical calendar that will be printed and shipped on demand from CafePress.com.
I create or outsource a few articles based on my questions, makes some blog posts, and buy some traffic, and tweak my salespage. I could even offer a free pdf ebook with the top 7 questions and sell a bigger pdf book with the top 100 questions and answers.
Repeat for dogs and puppies.
